This route is used for both ascending and descending, with provision of huts along the trail. The route features three stations: Mandara, Horombo, and Kibo. The Marangu Route, often called the “Coca Cola” route, is mistakenly considered easy. Although it requires a minimum of 5 days, it is not easier than other routes. The main reason for its reputation is that climbers sleep in huts instead of tents. An optional acclimatization day at Horombo Huts is recommended for those with no prior high-altitude trekking experience. The route starts from the park headquarters in Marangu village and proceeds west towards Kibo, passing through diverse landscapes including rainforest, heath, moorland, alpine desert, and arctic zones.
